I recently came across one of the strangest stories from Nigeria’s military era, and honestly, I had to dig deeper because the story sounded almost unbelievable.

Her name was Gloria Okon.

In April 1985, Gloria Okon was reportedly arr33sted at the Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano over suspected drug traffi3king. She was taken into custody at a time when Nigeria’s military government was dealing very harshly with drug offences.

Then something happened that turned an ordinary arrest into one of Nigeria’s biggest mysteries.

Gloria Okon was reported daad while in custody.

Contemporary records from the Nigeria Year Book 1986 reported that a heroin suspect identified as Gloria Okon had d!ed at Aminu Kano Memorial Hospital. The same record said she had eaten while in custody.

But this is where the story became strange.

Not long after the reported deth, rumours began circulating that the woman who d!ed might not have been the real Gloria Okon.

According to the rumour, the real Gloria had supposedly been moved out of Nigeria and was still alive somewhere abroad.

And that is where the phrase “Gloria Okon d!ed twice” came from.

One version of the story said Gloria had d!ed in detention.

Another claimed that the woman who died was somebody else and that the real Gloria was alive.

For decades, Nigerians kept asking the same question:

If Gloria Okon really died in custody, why did people later claim to have seen her alive?

The mystery became even bigger because the story eventually became connected, in public speculation, to the assassination of journalist Dele Giwa in 1986.

Dele Giwa was keelled by a parcel bomb at his Lagos home on October 19, 1986. Over the years, a conspiracy theory developed claiming that he had been investigating the Gloria Okon story and that this was somehow connected to his assassination.

But here is something important that is often left out when this story is told:

The alleged connection between Gloria Okon and Dele Giwa’s m00rder has never been conclusively established.

Yakubu Mohammed, one of the founding figures of Newswatch, later strongly rejected the popular version. He said Newswatch had only heard a rumour that Gloria might not have died, investigated it, and found no substance to it. He also said Dele Giwa was not involved in that particular discussion.

So, after going through the available accounts, this is what makes the Gloria Okon story so fascinating to me:

We have a woman who was genuinely reported to have been arrested.

We have records reporting that a woman identified as Gloria Okon d!ed in custody.

Then we have another story claiming that the real Gloria Okon survived and was taken abroad.

And for decades, those two versions have existed side by side.

That is why people began calling her “the woman who died twice.”

But whether Gloria Okon actually d!ed in 1985, whether another woman was mistaken for her, or whether the story grew into a conspiracy over the years remains one of those unresolved chapters of Nigeria’s history.

Sometimes, the most fascinating part of history isn’t what we know.

It is what we still cannot prove.
