Historical Context: The Fante-Asante War of 1873: The Fante Confederacy after their war against the Dutch in 1872 had to get back to prepare for a heavy assault launched by the Asante Empire in 1873. The Fante had longstanding regional rivalries and conflicts with the neighboring Ashanti (Asante) kingdom. A rivalry that began in 1765.

Attire and Equipment: The depicted warriors wear traditional garments and cartridge belts, carrying long rifles and sidearms typical of the period’s regional conflicts.

Conflict Outcome: These conflicts contributed to major military expeditions in the region during the 1870s. It resulted in the weakening of the Asante Empire but it also weakened the Fante Confederacy. This paved the way for both polities to end up been colonized, the Fante in 1874 and Asante in 1901.
