OnThisDay September 19, 2015, Chief Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, popularly known as H.I.D. Awolowo, di€d at her home in Ikenne, Ogun State, at the age of 99.

She was only 67 days away from celebrating her 100th birthday.

Born on November 25, 1915, H.I.D. was much more than the wife of one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

She was a successful businesswoman who built and managed businesses that helped support her family, while her husband pursued his political career. She was also deeply involved in Nigerian politics and played an active role during some of the country’s most important political periods.

When Obafemi Awolowo was imprisoned in the First Republic, H.I.D. remained politically active and represented his interests. During the Second Republic, she coordinated the women’s wing of the Unity Party of Nigeria and travelled across the country campaigning alongside her husband.

For decades, her home in Ikenne remained an important meeting place for politicians and public figures. Even in 2015, at the age of 99, she remained a respected figure whose views carried considerable weight.

Her husband famously described her as his “jewel of inestimable value.”

On September 19, 2015, that remarkable chapter came to an end.

She was buried beside her husband in Ikenne on November 25, 2015 — the very day she would have turned 100.

A woman who lived through colonial Nigeria, independence, the First Republic, the Civil War era, military rule, the Second Republic and the return to democracy.

She came within 67 days of becoming a centenarian.
