In the middle of the Nigerian Civil W@r, something extraordinary happened in the Mid-Western Region.

On September 19, 1967, while Biafran forces were retreating under pressure from advancing Federal tr00ps, Major Albert Nwazu Okonkwo, the Biafran-appointed milit@ry administrator of the Mid-West, made a dramatic announcement.

He declared the territory of the Mid-Western Region to be the “Republic of Benin” — an autonomous and sovereign republic, with Benin City as its capital.

The announcement was remarkable.

Just months earlier, the Mid-Western Region had tried to remain outside the conflict. But in August 1967, Biafran forces invaded and occupied the region, taking control of Benin City. Okonkwo became its military administrator.

By September, however, Federal troops were advancing rapidly to retake the territory.

Then came the extraordinary declaration.

In his broadcast, Okonkwo proclaimed that the new Republic of Benin would conduct its own affairs, make laws, enter treaties, wage w@r and make peace, while still collaborating milit@rily with Biafra. He also declared that the new republic would support the Organisation of African Unity and seek membership of the United Nations.

But there was one enormous problem.

The new republic was born while the army that created it was already losing control of the territory.

Federal troops were closing in on Benin City.

Within hours, the Nigerian Army recaptured the city. The Briti3sh High Commissioner reported that crowds welcomed the returning Federal troops.

The Republic of Benin had barely existed before it disappeared.

Its lifespan was measured not in years, months or even weeks — but in hours.

It remains one of the strangest and least remembered episodes of the Nigerian Civil W@r: a republic proclaimed inside Nigeria while a w@r was still raging, only to vanish almost as quickly as it appeared.

History is full of stories like this — moments that lasted only a few hours but left behind a permanent place in the historical record.
