They sent him to Sokoto to break him,
To bury him in the desert,
Far from Abuja, far from Biafra land

But he arrived in Sokoto,
And Sokoto erupted.

Officials ran to the gate,
Inmates pressed their faces to the bars,
Joy, loud, raw joy,
As if a savior had come.

He did not come with hate,
He came with heart.

As usual, he asked:
“Are your children in School?”
And took over their tuition,
“You mean you don’t have Lawyers?”
And he assigned them Lawyers,
“Have you eaten?”
And shared his last plate.

Prison officials now run to him for assistance,
The same uniform that locked him,
Now seeks his counsel.

Today is his birthday,
And the walls of Sokoto Prison cannot contain it,
The city is agog,
Because goodies flow with September 25th.

They sent a prisoner to Sokoto,
But Sokoto received a Prince.
