Let’s explore some of those operations.
Operation Unicord (July 1967): The opening offensive by federal forces, launching a two-pronged attack from Northern Nigeria across the Biafran border toward Gakem and Nsukka. It aimed to crush the secession quickly, capture Nsukka, and secure a path to Enugu.
This operation was successful because the federal forces did take Enugu which was the capital of Biafra at the time but the w*r didn’t end there.
Operation Tiger Claw (October 1967): This was a major amphibious assault executed by the 3rd Marine Commando Division to capture the strategic coastal port city of Calabar which was part of the old Eastern region which later became part of Biafra. It was designed to choke off Biafra’s access to the sea, block foreign aid routes, and establish a firm beachhead in the southeastern flank.
This operation was successful because the federal forces took over the city and the entire Coast line.
Operation OAU (September 1968): An ambitious multi-pronged offensive designed by federal commanders to capture the key Biafran-held cities of Owerri, Aba, and Umuahia. The goal was to destroy the remaining core of Biafran resistance and bring a rapid end to the war.
This operation was successful because the federal forces did take the 3 towns although it took longer than expected. The town of Owerri was recaptured by the Biafran forces in 1969 but was retaken by the federal forces in 1970.
Operation Tail-Punch (December 1969 – January 1970): The final, decisive federal offensive led by Olusegun Obasanjo’s 3rd Marine Commando Division. It was meant to slice Biafran territory in two, capture the strategic Uli Airstrip (Biafra’s vital supply lifeline), and force an immediate, complete surrender.
This operation was successful because by the time the tasks of this operation were half way, the Biafran resistance collapsed
