SAMORA MACHEL, THE PRICE OF A VISION

On this day in 1933, Samora Machel was born, a Freetown figher who later inherited a Mozambique where adult literacy was roughly 7%, life expectancy was barely 41 years, and colonialism had left the overwhelming majority of the population behind.

✊ He chose education.
✊ Healthcare.
✊ National development.
✊ Liberation.
And he did not merely speak about transformation. Schools expanded. Literacy programmes reached millions. Healthcare became a national priority. Mozambique’s resources and major economic sectors were placed under state control.

Then, on 19 October 1986, at just 53 years old, Samora Machel died when his presidential aircraft crashed near the Mozambique–South Africa border. The official investigation attributed the crash to the aircraft’s navigation failure, while the South African government disputed aspects of that finding. Questions surrounding the tragedy have never completely disappeared.

No accusation here. Just history. Because across Africa, there is a recurring question worth asking: Why have some of the continent’s most determined liberation-era leaders faced extraordinary danger when their politics challenged entrenched Western interests? Imagine LIMUMBA. SANKARA. MACHEL. Different countries. Different circumstances. Different eras.

But the handwriting of African history deserves to be studied, not romanticised, not ignored. Machel died young. But the millions who gained access to education, healthcare and a new national identity carried his work beyond his lifetime. Africa must remember its leaders not only by how they died, but by what they were trying to build before they died. SAMORA MACHEL, THE DREAM DID NOT DIE.
