On 16 July 1953, a guest at a royal garden party in London stood out in a colourful display of Gold Coast identity.

His name was Mr. J. B. Odunton, representing the Gold Coast, now Ghana.

While many guests at Buckingham Palace wore formal Western clothing, Odunton appeared in traditional African attire, bringing the colours and cultural identity of his homeland into the heart of the British monarchy.

Remember the timing: this was four years before Ghana gained independence. The Gold Coast was still under British colonial rule, yet its people were already representing their culture and identity on international stages.

Odunton’s later career also brought him into an unusual position. He became associated with royal communications and the preparations surrounding Queen Elizabeth II’s historic visit to Ghana in 1961.

This photograph is more than a record of a garden party. It captures a moment when a Gold Coast representative appeared before Britain’s royal establishment without leaving his cultural identity at the door.
