Joseph Kony, the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), is regarded as one of the most feared rebel leaders in Africa. Originally from Uganda, his reign of terror later spread into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan.

Kony established the LRA in northern Uganda in 1987 after emerging as a spiritual leader. He claimed to be a spirit medium and prophet who received instructions from supernatural forces. His aim was to overthrow the Ugandan government and rule the country based on the Biblical Ten Commandments.

However, the movement later became notorious for attacks on civilians, abductions and other atrocities. As the Ugandan military intensified its operations, the LRA was pushed out of Uganda. Kony and his remaining fighters moved into remote areas of the DRC and later operated across the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

The LRA became notorious for abducting children and forcing them into its ranks. Boys were turned into fighters, while girls were subjected to forced marriages and sexual slavery. Thousands of children were abducted during the group’s decades-long insurgency.

Although the LRA has been significantly weakened, Kony has remained at large and his exact whereabouts are unknown.

In 2005, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against him over war crimes and crimes against humanity. In November 2025, judges confirmed 39 charges against him, clearing the way for a trial if he is ever brought before the court.

The United States has offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to his arrest or transfer to justice.
