In a striking development, IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has rejected any self-appointed government, council or political body claiming authority to speak or act on behalf of Biafra without a direct mandate from the Biafran people.
In a statement dated October 3, 2026, Kanu reportedly made his position unmistakable: the political future of Biafrans cannot be decided by a handful of individuals behind closed doors. It must be determined by the people themselves.
His demand is for a free, fair and internationally credible referendum under United Nations supervision, through which the people can freely express their political will.
The most consequential warning, however, is against attempts to “manufacture” a government in the name of Biafra and subsequently present it as representing Kanu or the wider Biafran population.
The message carries a deeper political significance: legitimacy cannot simply be declared—it must be earned through the consent of the people.
Whatever one’s position on Biafra, Kanu’s stated framework shifts the argument from who claims to represent Biafra to the more fundamental question of who has the democratic mandate to do so.
And that is where the controversy becomes particularly explosive.
If the people are the ultimate source of political legitimacy, then no individual, faction, committee or self-appointed authority can simply assume that mandate on their behalf.
Biafra, in this formulation, is not a title to be inherited or a government to be manufactured. It is a political question whose ultimate answer, Kanu insists, must come from the people themselves.
