TODAY IN HISTORY:ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 5, 1962: THE DAY A HIDDEN STOCKPILE OF WEA`P0NS DEEPENED NIGERIA’S POLITICAL CR1SIS
.
Nigeria was barely two years into independence when a disturbing discovery added fuel to an already d@ngerous political cr1sis.
On October 5, 1962, police reported finding an arms cache during searches connected to prominent Action Group figures.
The reported haul was alarming: nine sub-machine gu`ns, 35 tear-gas p1stols, 10 revolvers and about 7,000 rounds of @mmunition.
But the biggest question was not simply what was found.
It was:
What were the we@pons meant for?
At the time, the Action Group was already tearing apart from an intense internal power struggle between Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief S. L. Akintola.
The Federal Government alleged that the weapons were connected to a plan to overthrow the government by force.
The allegations would eventually become part of the much larger treason case against Awolowo and other Action Group leaders.
But the circumstances surrounding the weapons and what they were actually intended for remained deeply disputed.
What began as a political crisis was becoming something far more d@ngerous.
Nigeria’s young democracy was entering one of the darkest chapters of the First Republic.
And within months, one of the country’s most prominent political leaders would be standing trial for treason.
So, what do you think?
Was the arms discovery evidence of a genuine plot to overthrow the government — or was the discovery used to destroy a powerful political opposition?
