TODAY IN HISTORY —ON THIS DAY OCTOBER 8, 1993:THE NIGHT NIGERIA QUALIFIED FOR ITS FIRST WORLD CUP

31 years ago today, Nigeria achieved something the country had been waiting decades to see.

On October 8, 1993, the Super Eagles walked onto the pitch in Algiers knowing that one result could change Nigerian football forever.

Nigeria faced Algeria in the final match of their qualifying group for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

And the pressure was enormous.
Nigeria had never qualified for the World Cup before.

But the team had built a strong qualifying campaign under Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof.

Just two weeks earlier, Nigeria had destroyed Côte d’Ivoire 4–1 in Lagos, with Thompson Oliha, Daniel Amokachi and Rashidi Yekini among the scorers.

Now they needed to finish the job in Algeria.
And Nigeria struck first.
In the 19th minute, Finidi George put Nigeria ahead.

For a while, it looked like Nigeria might finish the job with a victory.
But Algeria fought back.
Sidi Ahmed Zerrouki equalized in the 71st minute.

The match ended:
🇩🇿 ALGERIA 1–1 NIGERIA 🇳🇬
And that draw was enough.

NIGERIA HAD QUALIFIED FOR THE WORLD CUP FOR THE FIRST TIME.

The players who started that historic match included Wilfred Agbonavbare, Augustine Eguavoen, Stephen Keshi, Uche Okechukwu, Ben Iroha, Finidi George, Thompson Oliha, Daniel Amokachi and Rashidi Yekini.

For Nigerian football fans, this was more than just another qualifying match.
It opened the door to a golden generation.

Only months later, the same team would win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and then travel to the United States for Nigeria’s historic World Cup debut.

And what happened there?
Nigeria announced itself to the world.
On their World Cup debut, the Super Eagles defeated Bulgaria 3–0, with Rashidi Yekini scoring Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goal.

But it all began with that night in Algiers.
October 8, 1993.
The night Nigeria finally got its ticket to the biggest stage in world football.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE 1994 SUPER EAGLES?

Who was your favorite player from that historic team?
