I. THE BEGINNING: 2000 BC — LEJJA & OPI — THE OLDEST IRON IN THE WORLD

Before bronze, Ndi Igbo already had industry.

• Lejja, Nsukka (Enugu State): Archaeologists discovered ancient iron smelting furnaces dated to 2000 BCE — that is 4,000 years ago.
• Opi, Nsukka: Dated to 750 BCE.

What it means: This is one of the oldest iron smelting sites in the whole world — older than many European sites. It proves Igbo ancestors were already living, farming and manufacturing iron in their present land thousands of years before Christ.

II. THE GOLDEN AGE: 850 AD — IGBO-UKWU — THE DISCOVERY THAT SHOCKED THE WORLD

• 1938: A man named Isaiah Anozie was digging a cistern in Igbo-Ukwu and discovered ancient bronze.
• 1959-1964: Famous British Archaeologist Thurstan Shaw excavated 3 major sites: Igbo-Isaiah (Shrine), Igbo-Richard (Royal Burial Chamber), Igbo-Jonah (Ancient Pit).
• Carbon Dating Result: 850 AD to 950 AD — 9th to 10th Century. Lab Codes: Hv-1515 = 894 AD, I-2008 = 902 AD, Hv-1514 = 923 AD.

What was found? Over 700 high-quality bronze, copper and iron objects — staffs, vessels, pendants, ornaments.

Why is this World News?

1. It is the earliest known bronze casting in West Africa and earliest copper alloy art in Sub-Saharan Africa.
2. The technique — Lost-Wax Casting — was more advanced than European bronze of same period.
3. Isotope analysis proved the metals were LOCAL — not imported from Europe.
4. Colonial scholars believed Africans could not produce such art without European help. Igbo-Ukwu proved them wrong — Ndi Igbo did it 900 years before Europeans arrived.

International Trade — Since 9th Century:
Chemical analysis of over 250,000 glass beads found at Igbo-Ukwu traced them to Old Cairo, Fustat in Egypt, and Mesopotamia / Iran. This means in 850 AD, Ancient Igbo was already trading with Byzantine Egypt and the Middle East — before Benin Empire even existed.

III. THE KINGDOM: ERI & NRI — THE SPIRITUAL HEADQUARTERS OF IGBO LAND

After Igbo-Ukwu came political and spiritual organization.

• Eri is documented as the progenitor of Ndi Igbo. UNIZIK PhD sources and oral tradition say Eri came from the north and settled in Aguleri — where Omambala and Ezu rivers meet.
• Eri begat Nri-Ifikuanim, Agulu and others.
• Nri-Ifikuanim left Aguleri and founded Nri Kingdom around 10th Century AD (traditionally c. 948 AD). He performed Ikpu-Alu (cleansing of abomination), created Ozo Title, and proclaimed Igbo New Year — Igu-Aro.

Nri Kingdom had NO army — it ruled by spirituality and peace. Nri men traveled across Igbo land to crown kings, cleanse abomination and confer titles. That is why many towns claim Umu-Nri.

Example — Njikoka Federation:

• Enugwu-Ukwu, Nawfia, Enugwu-Agidi, Agukwu (Nri) — sons of Okpalanaka, son of Nri-Ifikuanim.
• Abagana, Abba, Nimo, Eziowelle — descendants of Owelle — celebrate Uta Nwanne na Nwanne. Abagana is Abagana Ebo Teghete — 9 Clans.

This Nri Kingdom lasted over 1,000 years until British destroyed its political power in 1911.

IV. DOCUMENTED TIMELINE — HOW OLD IS IGBO COMPARED TO OTHERS?

• 2000 BCE — Lejja Igbo Iron — Igbo iron industry begins
• 1000 BCE – 500 BCE — Nok Culture — Oldest terracotta art in Nigeria
• 850 AD – 950 AD — Igbo-Ukwu Bronze — Earliest bronze in West Africa

V. FINAL VERDICT — IS IGBO THE OLDEST CIVILIZATION?

Igbo is NOT the oldest civilization in the world — Sumer (3500 BC) and Egypt (3100 BC) are older. In Nigeria, Nok (1000 BC) has older terracotta art.

Ndi Igbo has one of the OLDEST iron smelting sites in the world (2000 BC) and the OLDEST bronze casting in West Africa (850 AD), with proof of international trade with Egypt and Middle East 1,200 years ago*.
