THE HIDDEN IGBOS OF KOGI STATE: HISTORY, ORIGIN & 5 POWERFUL CLANS YOU MUST KNOW! π³π¬β€οΈ
Many Nigerians think Igbo is only 5 States. WRONG!
Igbo land is bigger than South-East. We are in South-South, Kogi, Benue, and even beyond. Today, let me show you our brothers in KOGI STATE!
π WHERE ARE THEY?
Kogi State shares boundary with Anambra and Enugu. That is why Indigenous Igbo people are found in Eastern Kogi, especially in Igalamela/Odolu, Ibaji and Ofu LGA. They live side by side with Igala people.
π HOW DID IGBO GET TO KOGI? β THE TRUE ORIGIN
History Part 1: The Ancient Migration From Nsukka
Our elders said it clearly. A 75-year-old man in Avrugo said: “All of us here are Igbo but we are now in Kogi State. My ancestor was from Ngwuru Nsukka.”
Historians confirm: After Igbo origin from Nri-Awka-Orlu, there was population explosion. Our ancestors moved to Nsukka-Udi highlands, then down to Ibagwa Ani β Okpuje β Avrugo β Ibaji β Akpanya. This migration happened hundreds of years ago. Archaeology shows Igbo have lived in Nsukka since 3000 BCE farming and smelting iron at Lejja (2000 BC).
So Kogi Igbos are of two types:
- Aboriginal Igbos β Original owners of the land.
- Migrant Igbos β Brothers from Nsukka, Uzo-Uwani, Aguleri-Nri who joined them.
In the olden days, there was no State or LGA. Only CLANS!
History Part 2: State Creation Divided Us
The biggest problem is STATE CREATION. Government used state creation to divide brothers. They carved pure Igbo villages and put them inside Kogi. That is why today they speak Igala as second language because of marriage and proximity, but their first language remains pure Nsukka Igbo dialect.
Proof: In Eke Avrugo Market, they speak ONLY IGBO. No English, no Igala. Greetings like:
Unu aboo? I boo? I di agaa? Deeje! Ala nu!
Pure Nsukka Igbo!
π₯ THE 5 MOST POPULAR IGBO CLANS IN KOGI STATE:
- AKAPANYA CLAN β The Giant (Igalamela/Odolu LGA)
The biggest! Everyone born there speaks Igbo fluently. Villages: Agbedo, Oji Akpanya, Ogboligbo, Ijagudu, Ajiobi, Ojiela Akpanya, Akpabirikpo, Agbokete, Apata, Igudu, Odumogwu. Origin: Nsukka-Enugu boundary, Anambra River basin. - AVRURUGO / EKE AVRURUGO CLAN β The Purest Igbo Village (Ibaji LGA)
100% Igbo, no mixture. Location: You pass Nsukka β Ibagwa Ani β Okpuje β Avrugo. Market: Eke Avrugo. Villages: Nwajala, Umuoye, Ubulie-Umueze, Umuobu, Anocha. - EBOKWE / UGWUEBONYI CLAN (Igalamela/Odolu)
Cluster of Igbo villages: Ugwuebonyi, Ebokwe, Ozara, Amaeke, Amankpo, Amaokwu, Amadiefioha, Amaufulu. Origin: Uzo-Uwani & Nri-Aguleri migrants. - ONICHA-IGO CLAN (Ofu LGA)
Small but powerful! Name says it all β Onicha-Igo like Onitsha. Indigenous Igbo people in Ofu LGA, migrated via Anambra River. - ODEKE / NWAJALA CLAN (Ibaji LGA)

β€οΈ WHY WE MUST CELEBRATE THEM:
As Senator Ned Nwoko said: “Ndigbo must embrace our brothers in South-South, Kogi and Benue.”
These Kogi Igbos prove Igbo is not small. We are 45 Million strong, Top 3 in Nigeria, Top 10 in Africa! Some villages have only 2000 people, but their spirit is pure Igbo.
We cannot leave them behind!
Long Live Ndi Igbo in Kogi!
Long Live Ala Igbo Nile!
