Jean-Bédel Bokassa. Leader of Central African Republic. In 1977 he crowned himself EMPEROR and spent $20 MILLION on his gold crown while his people slept hungry.
In 1979 his wife had a company selling school uniforms And he passed on law that Every child MUST buy a uniform from his wife’s company and Those uniforms were much more expensive than the local one.
Poor parents couldn’t afford it.
At certain times children gather and protest peacefully from the pressure saying: “WE ARE STUDENTS NOT CRIMINALS”
He got angry. He arrested hundreds of children — 8 years, 10 years, 12 years old. Locked them in Ngaragba prison.
That night he went there himself and beat them to death with his cane. Over 100 children died. Because of uniform.
FOR UNIFORM!
France removed him later. He died in 1996.
BUT MY QUESTION: How many Bokassas do we still have today in Africa wearing suits instead of crowns?
They don’t wear crowns anymore. They wear suits. They don’t force you to buy uniforms, they force you to pay bribes for school, for hospitals, for jobs.
They still spend millions on cars and houses abroad, while children live in dust
My people, we are young, we are loud, we want change. But change starts when we KNOW our history.
If we don’t know where we are coming from, we will never know where we are going.
Bokassa died, but his mentality is still alive in many offices today.
