🇳🇬 HE RULED NIGERIA FOR JUST 200 DAYS BUT HIS NAME LIVES ON IN HISTORY
📆 July 29, 1975 – February 13, 1976
📍 Lagos, Nigeria
His name is General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, Nigeria’s Head of State and the shortest-serving president in the history of the country.
On July 29, 1975, Murtala Mohammed participated in a military coup that overthrew Yakubu Gowon.
He quickly got to work on his campaign of “revolutionary change.” His government announced its intent to return Nigeria to civilian rule shortly after taking power.
Furthermore, he began to restructure the federal government and embark on sweeping social and economic reforms to end government corruption and mismanagement.
In addition, he advanced Nigeria’s foreign policy by supporting many Third World causes and promoting African unity.
Unfortunately, his hopes, dreams, and plans were cut short when he was shot dead in an ambush in Lagos on February 13, 1976, during an attempted coup.
The assassin was Lieutenant Colonel Bukar Suka Dimka. Murtala Mohammed was only 37 years old when he became the Head of State, and he ruled Nigeria for only 200 days.
His death stunned the country and created a leadership vacuum that was quickly filled by his deputy, General Olusegun Obasanjo.
Nevertheless, years after his death, his memory and legacy live on, if only as an icon of rapid change, revolutionary spirit, and return to civilian rule.
But what if Murtala Mohammed had lived? What if he had not been killed in the coup attempt? Would Nigeria be the same country as today?
Well, we can only wonder about the “what if” and speculate about his potential impact on the current situation in Nigeria.
However, we can analyze his political and social legacy, his achievements, and his impact on Nigeria as a whole.
So, what do you think about General Murtala Mohammed? What legacy does he have in your opinion? Tell us in the comments below.
