Haile Selassie I: Fifty Years of Service to His People and Their Spiritual Heritage
“During the past 50 years not only did We labour that Our people may lead a better life while on this earth but We also did not spare Our energy and treasure to develop their spiritual heritage, the value of which no human mind can assess.”
H.I.M. Emperor Haile Selassie I
Address to the World Evangelical Congress in Berlin

Haile Selassie I: Fifty Years of Service to His People and Their Spiritual Heritage
In this statement from October 28, 1966, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I emphasized that his responsibilities extended beyond the material development of Ethiopia to the spiritual welfare of its people.
His Majesty identified two dimensions of his reign:
- Material welfare: Improving the living conditions of the Ethiopian people.
- Spiritual heritage: Preserving and developing their religious inheritance, whose value he considered beyond human calculation.
The historical significance of this statement is that His Majesty presented his Christian faith and his responsibilities as sovereign as interconnected.
For students of RasTafari, this is an important primary-source statement. Haile Selassie I did not describe spiritual development as secondary to political or economic progress. He explicitly included it among the central accomplishments and obligations of his reign.
His Majesty’s words deserve to be studied in the context of his Christian convictions, rather than interpreted independently of them.
