101 YEARS OF WISDOM, 63 YEARS ON THE THRONE: CELEBRATING IGWE KENNETH ONYENEKE ORIZU III OF NNEWI
101 YEARS OF WISDOM, 63 YEARS ON THE THRONE: CELEBRATING IGWE KENNETH ONYENEKE ORIZU III OF NNEWI
Today, we celebrate a man whose life and reign have become an important part of the history of Nnewi and Ala Igbo.
His Royal Majesty, Igwe Dr. Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III,p CON, JP, the 20th Obi of Otolo and Igwe of Nnewi Kingdom, turns 101 today, October 30, 2026.
Born on October 30, 1925, Igwe Orizu III comes from the historic Nnofo Royal lineage of Nnewi. His path to the throne followed a royal tradition that had been upheld by generations before him. In 1963, following the death of his father, Igwe Josiah Nnaji Orizu II, he succeeded him as the traditional ruler of Nnewi and was formally crowned on June 2 of that year.
Since then, he has spent over six decades on the throne, making his reign one of the longest in Nigeria’s traditional history. He has witnessed different generations, changing times and significant developments, while remaining a central figure in the preservation of Nnewi’s traditions and identity.
To understand the significance of his reign, it is also important to look at the story of Nnewi itself.
Nnewi is one of the historic kingdoms of Ala Igbo and has grown over the years into one of southeastern Nigeria’s major commercial and industrial centres. Much of its economic story is connected to the enterprise, determination and ingenuity of its people. During Igwe Orizu’s reign, Nnewi continued to strengthen its reputation as a centre of indigenous business and entrepreneurship.
The philosophy of Aku ruo ulo, which encourages people to bring their wealth, investments and achievements back home, has also remained an important part of Nnewi’s identity. It reflects a culture of enterprise and community development that has helped shape the kingdom’s place in modern Igbo society.
Beyond its economic achievements, Nnewi’s traditional institutions and cultural heritage remain an important part of its identity. Igwe Orizu’s long reign has provided a sense of continuity through changing times, with traditional leadership continuing to occupy a significant place in the life of the community.
At 101, his story goes beyond the number of years he has lived or the length of time he has occupied the throne. It is also a story of continuity, tradition and the responsibility that comes with preserving an institution that connects generations.
For Ndị Igbo, whose history and identity are closely tied to their communities, ancestral heritage and traditional institutions, the life of a monarch who has witnessed more than a century of history and spent over six decades on the throne is certainly worth celebrating.
Today, as we mark this special milestone, we recognise Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III and the place his reign holds in the history of Nnewi and Ala Igbo.
Happy 101st Birthday, Your Royal Majesty!
May the years ahead bring continued peace, strength and fulfilment.
Long live Igwe Kenneth Onyeneke Orizu III.
Long live Nnewi Kingdom.
Long live Ala Igbo!
