THE ANCIENT DEITIES OF EKPEYE, OGBA, IKWERE AND ETCHE: ANOTHER CONNECTION TO IGBO HERITAGE
The traditional religious history of Ekpeye, Ogba, Ikwerre and Etche provides another fascinating window into their cultural connections with the wider Igbo world.
Consider some of the ancient deities and spiritual institutions found among these communities.
Igwekala: Igwekala is a recognised traditional deity and shrine in Igbo religious history. Interestingly, Ekpeye also has an Igwekala shrine, providing an important cultural and religious connection worth examining.
Ubochi: Ubochi is another name found in Ekpeye traditional religious practice. Academic research on the Ekpeye Egbukele masquerade tradition documents the Ubochi gods and their association with spiritual protection and traditional religious authority. The name itself deserves attention as part of the indigenous Igbo religious vocabulary.
Amadioha (Kamalu): One of the most recognised deities in Igbo traditional religion, Amadioha is associated with thunder, lightning and justice. The famous Kamalu oracle of Ozuzu in Etche is an important part of this religious heritage.
These are not merely similarities in names. They point towards shared religious vocabulary, indigenous institutions, spiritual beliefs and historical cultural connections.
Igbo identity is much older and broader than present-day state boundaries. The fact that Ekpeye, Ogba, Ikwerre and Etche are in Rivers State does not erase their historical and cultural connections with other Igbo communities.
Our names, languages, traditions, deities and ancestral institutions deserve to be studied, preserved and understood.
Ekpeye is Igbo. Ogba is Igbo. Ikwerre is Igbo. Etche is Igbo.
