THE TONGUE CAN BUILD A VILLAGE OR DESTROY A KINGDOM

THE TONGUE CAN BUILD A VILLAGE OR DESTROY A KINGDOM

THE TONGUE CAN BUILD A VILLAGE OR DESTROY A KINGDOM

The elders say, “Before the spear is thrown, the tongue has already chosen the battlefield.” A person’s words carry a power greater than iron. A spear can wound one body, but a careless tongue can wound generations. A sword may destroy a house, but words can destroy trust, families, nations, and the spirit of a people.

In the wisdom of our ancestors, speech was never treated as something cheap. An elder did not speak because he had a mouth; he spoke because his words carried truth, healing, and responsibility. Silence was often considered wiser than words spoken in anger.

A village is built when people encourage one another, settle disputes with wisdom, teach children with patience, and speak truth with compassion. Every word of peace is like a seed planted in fertile soil. Over time, those seeds become unity, prosperity, and strong communities. A child who grows up hearing words of hope often becomes an adult who gives hope to others.

But a kingdom falls when lies replace truth, insults replace respect, and hatred replaces understanding. History has shown that many wars did not begin with weapons—they began with proud tongues, false accusations, and leaders whose words divided their own people. Long before buildings burn, hearts have already been set on fire by reckless speech.

The tongue reveals the heart. If the heart is filled with wisdom, the mouth will bring peace. If the heart is filled with envy, pride, and bitterness, the mouth will spread destruction wherever it goes.

That is why our elders taught the young to think before speaking. They would say, “A word cannot be returned once it leaves the mouth, just as an arrow cannot be recalled after it has left the bow.” The wise person weighs every sentence because they know that words become memories, and memories shape the future.

Africa today needs builders more than destroyers. Our communities do not need more voices that spread tribal hatred, division, and hopelessness. They need voices that restore dignity, inspire unity, preserve truth, and remind every child of the greatness that lives within our people.

So let your tongue become a bridge, not a barrier; a medicine, not a poison; a light, not a fire that consumes. Speak words that heal broken hearts, strengthen weak hands, unite divided families, and awaken sleeping nations.

For the elder knows this timeless truth:

A wise tongue builds what generations can inherit. A foolish tongue destroys what generations struggled to create.
