There is a king mentioned in the Bible so powerful that his name alone was enough to stop an invasion.

His name was Taharqa. A Nubian — born in what is now Sudan — who became Pharaoh of Egypt around 690 BC and built one of the most powerful empires the ancient world had ever seen.

Taharqa was part of the 25th Dynasty of Egypt — the Nubian Pharaohs. Black Africans from the south who marched north and conquered the most famous civilization in history, revived its culture, rebuilt its crumbling temples, and pushed its borders further than they had been in generations.

When the Assyrian king Sennacherib threatened to destroy Jerusalem the Bible records that King Hezekiah received news so significant it changed everything.

2 Kings 19 verse 9: When the Assyrian king heard that Taharqa king of Kush was marching out to fight against him he turned back.

Just the news that this African king was coming caused one of the world’s most feared armies to reverse course. Sennacherib did not wait to face him. He turned around and went home.

Taharqa was a builder on an extraordinary scale. He constructed more monuments across Egypt and Sudan than almost any pharaoh before him. He built temples at Karnak that still stand today. He raised massive columns that tower above modern visitors. He built his pyramid at Nuri in Sudan where it still rises from the desert floor.

He ruled an empire that stretched from the Mediterranean coast to deep into sub-Saharan Africa — one of the largest empires the ancient world had ever seen.

He was Black. He was African. He was one of the most powerful men who ever lived.

And his name is right there in the Bible — if you know where to look.
