Born Sandra Smith, she was a dancer, actress, activist, and a member of the Black Panther Party in Los Angeles, California. In 1969, during Fela’s visit to the United States with his band, their paths crossed in what would become a life-changing encounter.

At the time, Fela was searching for a new artistic direction. Sandra introduced him to books, political writings, and ideas focused on Black consciousness, Pan-Africanism, African identity, social justice, and the struggle against oppression.
