Before many Nigerian women had a political voice, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (1900–1978) was already challenging injustice through education, peaceful activism, and community leadership.

As a teacher, she believed education could transform society. As founder and leader of the Abeokuta Women’s Union, she mobilized thousands of women to campaign peacefully against unfair taxation and demand greater accountability from both colonial authorities and traditional institutions.

Her work extended beyond Abeokuta. She became an internationally respected advocate for women’s rights, social justice, and self-government, inspiring generations of activists across Africa.

Her legacy also lives on through the remarkable Ransome-Kuti family, whose contributions to music, medicine, human rights, and public service have influenced Nigeria for decades.
