ANCESTRAL INVOCATION
SEEKING WISDOM FROM YOUR LINEAGE

Our ancestors are not approached through fear, performance, or imitation. In many African traditions, remembrance begins with respect, preparation, humility, and discernment.

PREPARATION

  1. Choose your place
Find a quiet natural place where you can be still—beneath a tree, upon the soil, or near clean water. If your family or tradition has a particular sacred place, honour that practice.
  2. Cleanse
Wash your hands, face, and feet. Sprinkle clean natural water around your space. You may also use another cleansing practice traditionally used by your family or community.
  3. Make an offering
Pour a little clean water onto the earth. Water represents life, remembrance, and continuity. If your lineage has a customary offering, follow that tradition rather than inventing one.
  4. Dress simply
Wear natural, comfortable colours such as green, yellow, white, or black if these hold meaning in your tradition. Wear ordinary clothing. You do not need elaborate gowns or costumes. Come as yourself.
  5. Observe your tradition
Some families and spiritual traditions have specific rules concerning menstruation, ritual timing, food, sexuality, mourning, or ceremonial participation. Do not treat one group’s practice as universal. Follow the guidance of your own lineage and tradition.

THE INVOCATION

Creator of Heaven and Earth, Source of Life, I honour You first.

Grant me wisdom, discernment, and understanding.
Protect me from deception, confusion, and fear.
Let only what is true, good, and aligned with Your will draw near.

Guardians of this land, I greet you with respect.

Spirits of the soil, rivers, trees, stones, and places upon which I stand may there be peace between us.

To the honoured elders of my bloodline, I come with humility.

I am [your full name], child of [father’s name], of the [clan/totem].
My mother is [mother’s name], of the [mother’s clan/totem].

I remember those whose names are known
and those whose names have been forgotten.
I remember those whose graves are marked
and those who rest in unmarked places.

To my father’s grandmothers and grandfathers, I honour your memory.
To my mother’s grandmothers and grandfathers, I honour your memory.
To my father’s lineage, I honour your memory.
To my mother’s lineage, I honour your memory.

To all who walked before me in truth, I remember you.

If it is right before the Creator, may I receive wisdom from the righteous legacy of my family.

May I understand the path I am meant to walk.
May truth guide me.
May deception remain far from me.

If there are lessons I must learn, teach me with patience.
If there are wrongs I must correct, give me courage to face them.
If there are gifts within my lineage that should be used for good, give me wisdom to carry them with humility.

May I honour my family through integrity, compassion, and truth.

May my life bring healing where there has been brokenness,
unity where there has been division,
and hope for those who come after me.

I honour the Creator above all.
I honour the wisdom carried through my lineage.
May I walk in truth.

It is done.

I will listen with patience.
I will test what I receive with wisdom.
I will walk in peace.

SACRED GUIDELINES AFTER THE INVOCATION

  1. LISTEN TO NATURE FIRST
Do not rush to interpret every sound or sensation. Sit quietly. Listen to the wind, birds, water, and rustling leaves. Stillness comes before interpretation.
  2. KEEP A DREAM JOURNAL
If you experience a vivid or meaningful dream, record it immediately upon waking. Do not rush to announce its meaning. Reflect upon it first.
  3. COMMUNE REGULARLY
If your tradition permits it, remember your lineage regularly. This may involve speaking their names, pouring water, lighting a candle, singing, praying, or simply sitting in remembrance. Relationship is built through consistency, not demands.
  4. LIVE THE TEACHING
Wisdom is not proven by what you hear it is proven by how you live. If the lesson is compassion, practise compassion. If it is responsibility, become responsible. Ancestors are honoured through conduct, not performance.
  5. PRACTISE DISCERNMENT
Not every dream, thought, coincidence, or feeling is an ancestral message. Test what you experience. Does it lead toward truth, peace, responsibility, clarity, and goodness? Or does it produce fear, confusion, obsession, or harm? Do not blindly follow either. Discern.
  6. CLOSE WITH GRATITUDE
Give thanks before leaving. If your family tradition includes food, song, service, or another form of remembrance, follow that practice respectfully.
  7. PROTECT SACRED KNOWLEDGE
Not everything received in a sacred moment belongs on public platforms. Some things are personal. Some belong to the family. Some require the guidance of elders. Wisdom also means knowing what not to reveal.

I honour the Creator.
I honour my lineage.
I respect the living.
AND the departed.
And I walk forward not in fear, but in truth, wisdom, responsibility, and peace
