In the late 19th century, Ethiopian warriors went to battle in clothing and equipment shaped by local tradition, craftsmanship, and the realities of warfare.

Many wore the shamma, a large cotton cloth wrapped around the body, often over a long shirt and trousers. For protection, warriors could carry the gasha, a distinctive round shield traditionally made from hide. Alongside firearms and spears, one of Ethiopia’s most recognizable weapons was the shotel. This is a deeply curved sword associated with Ethiopian martial tradition.

During the Battle of Adwa in 1896, Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II defeated the invading Italian army, making Adwa one of the most celebrated victories in African history.
