🇬🇭 NKRUMAH AND HIS SECURITY TEAM — A PHOTOGRAPH WITH A HAUNTING AFTERSTORY

Look closely at this photograph.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah stands surrounded by members of his security and official entourage at Accra International Airport in February 1966.

At the time, Nkrumah’s security arrangements had become increasingly important. His government faced intense political tensions and a number of reported assassination attempts, making presidential protection a serious concern.

But the most remarkable part of this photograph is what happened after Nkrumah left Ghana.

On 22 February 1966, Nkrumah departed Ghana on a peace mission that included stops in Asia. He would eventually be in Beijing when the military and police overthrow of his government began on 24 February.

While Nkrumah was thousands of miles away, soldiers and police seized key installations in Accra and announced that his government had been overthrown.

The irony is difficult to miss.

The man surrounded by security officers in this photograph would soon be the President who could no longer return to the country he had led since independence.

And shortly afterwards, the April 1966 issue of Africa Report appeared with the striking headline:

“GHANA WITHOUT NKRUMAH.”

History sometimes gives us photographs whose meaning becomes clearer only after we know what happened next.

🇬🇭 This was more than a photograph of protection. It was a moment captured just before Ghana’s political history changed forever.
