EZOCHA UGWUOJI EBIA: Ancestor, Not Deity – The History of Ogrute’s Founding Father in #Enugu_Ezike

There is a persistent historical misconception in Ogrute and indeed among many church-goers today that Ezocha is a deity to be bound and cast out during prayers. This is historically inaccurate and culturally misleading.

EZOCHA OGILI UKWUABA, also known as EZOCHA UGWUOJI EBIA, was a man. A great man, a patriarch and a founding father – but a human being, not a deity.

The phrase you often hear, Abum Nwa Ezocha Ugwuoji Ebia – I am a child of Ezocha Ugwuoji Eb ia – is not a pagan chant. It is a declaration of lineage and identity. It is an ancestral affirmation that every true son and daughter of Ogrute Ezocha of Enugu Ezike, whether from Umuopu, Umuida or Ogrute Ulo, has the right to make.

According to authentic oral history passed down by elders of Ogrute in Enugu Ezike, Ezocha Ugwuoji Ebia was a mighty leader whose influence was so profound that his descendants deified him in memory.

He was fruitful and he established a family. He fathered four sons who became the pillars of Ogrute:

• Odumogwu Ezocha (Umuopu, Umuida, Umuoyinna Nwenyi
• Idoko Ezocha (Umuidoko of Ogrute Ulo)
• Asanya Ezocha (Umuasanya of Ogrute Ulo)
• Ogili Eze (Umuogili Eze of Ogrute Ulo)

From these four sons came the entire clan structure, villages and kindreds that make up Ogrute today. To say you are Ogrute is to trace your root back to one of these four.

Why Is He Mistaken For A Deity?

Two factors created this confusion:

1. His Demi-God Personality: In Igbo cosmology, there is a category of men called Ndi Ichie or Demi-gods. These are men who attained such extraordinary wisdom, spiritual power, valour and accomplishment in their lifetime that they transcend ordinary humanity after their passing. Ezocha was such a man. His charisma, his wealth, his spiritual depth made him seem larger than life and greater than mere humans.
2. The Mystery of His Passing: Unlike other great kings whose burial sites are known – for example, the Trinity Tree that marks where Eri of the Nri Kingdom was buried – no one can point to the grave of Ezocha. Oral tradition holds that He never died in the ordinary sense, but transited. This disappearance, not death, is what elevated him in the eyes of his children from a father to an object of veneration.

This is why we must make a clear distinction that, Ezocha HAD deities he worshipped but he WAS NOT a deity himself.

Historical records from the elders are clear. The deities of his compound were Enwe and Akpolisa. When you hear an elder say Enwe Ezocha Ugwuoji, he is not calling Ezocha Enwe. He is invoking the covenant which is Ezocha and the Enwe he worships. You can point to the shrine of Enwe and Akpolisa. You cannot point to the shrine of Ezocha as a god, because his memorial is his children.

Therefore;

It is an insult to ancestry for someone to ask “Does Ezocha have gbola? Can he impregnate a woman?” The question itself shows a loss of our historical consciousness. Of course he did. He was a man who married, who fathered children, who built a dynasty that still stands centuries later.

Whether you are a Pastor, Priest, Revivalist or Traditionalist, if your blood is from Ogrute, you are a child of Ezocha Ugwuoji Ebia. Acknowledging him does not make you a pagan; it makes you a person who knows his roots.

To forget Ezocha is to forget who we are.

Let us teach our children the right history. Ezocha Ugwuoji Ebia is our Father, our Patriarch, our Root. He is not a deity to be bound, but an ancestor to be honoured.
